India Gate is one of the most iconic war memorials in India, located in the heart of New Delhi. Originally known as the All India War Memorial, it was built to commemorate the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I while fighting for the British Army.

• Foundation Laid: 10 February 1921

• Inaugurated: 12 February 1931 by Viceroy Lord Irwin

• Designed by: Sir Edwin Lutyens, a British architect who also designed much of New Delhi

The names of over 13,000 Indian and British soldiers are inscribed on the walls of India Gate.

🕯️ Amar Jawan Jyoti (Eternal Flame):

• Installed in 1972 after the Indo-Pak war of 1971

• A black marble pedestal with a reversed rifle, helmet, and four urns with eternal flames.

In 2022, the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame was merged with the National War Memorial, located close to India Gate.
